Where the HGV Jobs Are

Rugby's logistics weight comes from DIRFT - the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal - sitting where the M6 meets the M1, A5 and A428, four miles from the town and rail-connected to the West Coast Main Line. DIRFT hosts distribution depots for names such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Royal Mail, DHL and Eddie Stobart, handling multiple freight trains daily and generating heavy road-side trunking. Beyond the terminal, Central Park, Swift Valley and the Somers Road estates carry manufacturing and trade distribution, while nearby Magna Park at Lutterworth and the Daventry and Crick warehouses extend the cluster. This is Golden Triangle territory, where rail-to-road transfer, national trunking and regional multi-drop all converge and keep HGV and van drivers busy around the clock.

Rail-served distribution depends on tight road connections either side of the terminal, so an unfilled cab quickly disrupts intermodal schedules. WSUK fills temporary driving jobs across every category - C+E Class 1 for trunk and container work, Class 2 rigids, 7.5-tonne and van/multi-drop - with drivers able to start at short notice. Each is checked against the DVLA, holds a valid Driver CPC, and passes right-to-work and reference screening before the first shift. We operate PAYE payroll and manage tachograph and working-time rules, so compliance never lands on your desk. When rail volumes spike or peak season hits DIRFT and the surrounding parks, we flex driver numbers up, then scale back cleanly as demand settles.

Sectors

The Sector Changes the Job

Two Class 1 jobs on the same licence can be completely different days. Where you drive matters as much as what you drive.

Retail & Parcel Distribution

RDC to store, or hub to depot on the parcel networks. Highly scheduled, tight time windows, usually curtain or box trailers with cages or roll-cages.

  • Booked delivery windows
  • Cage and roll-cage work
  • Heavy overnight demand

Food, Drink & Cold Chain

Chilled and frozen distribution, brewery and soft drinks work. Temperature discipline, hygiene rules and often early starts, with hand-ball on some drinks rounds.

  • Chilled & frozen work
  • Early starts common
  • Some handball on drinks

Construction, Bulk & Specialist

Tipper, bulk, container haulage, HIAB and ADR. More variable days, more site work, and premiums for the tickets that unlock it.

  • ADR & HIAB premiums
  • Site and yard work
  • Container haulage

Getting Into HGV Work

The usual route is car licence, then a provisional C entitlement with a D4 medical, then the Class 2 test, then Class 1 once you have some hours. Plenty of operators will take a newly qualified Class 2 driver and put them through to Class 1 later. If you are newly passed, say so rather than hiding it — some insurers restrict new passes, and we would rather send you to the operators who do not.

  • Class 1 (C+E)
  • Class 2 (C)
  • Driver CPC required
  • Digital tacho card
  • D4 medical needed
  • Newly qualified welcome
  • ADR & HIAB work

Common Questions

HGV Jobs in Rugby — FAQs

Which HGV sectors are strongest around Rugby?

It follows what is built nearby. Large distribution parks generate trunking and RDC-to-store running, food and drink sites generate chilled work with early starts, and quarries or builders merchants generate tipper and bulk work. We will tell you what is actually live around Rugby rather than what is theoretically there.

Is there night HGV work around Rugby?

Usually, and it is often the best-paid work available locally. Trunking between depots runs overnight to clear the network before the morning, so night shifts around Rugby tend to carry a premium over the equivalent day rate.

What is the difference between HGV and LGV?

Nothing — they are two names for the same thing. LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) is the current official term used on licences and in legislation; HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) is the older term the industry still uses daily. A job advertised as HGV and one advertised as LGV want the same licence.

What does an HGV driver earn?

Class 2 work typically pays £16.00—£20.00 an hour and Class 1 £18.00—£24.00, with night trunk running to £26.00 and ADR work commanding a premium. Rates are highest at peak and in the run-up to Christmas.

Can I get an HGV job as a newly qualified driver?

Yes, though it is narrower. Some operators' insurers restrict drivers with under a year on the licence, so the trick is being sent only to the ones that do not. Tell us your pass date and we will target accordingly rather than letting you collect rejections.
