HGV Driver Recruitment at Stansted: Drivers for Airport Freight and Essex Distribution

The quick answer

Driver supply at Stansted is a night-shift problem wearing a logistics costume. The express freight cycle needs Class 1 drivers departing in the small hours, five nights a week, to fixed slots. The pool that can do that — reliably, from rural Essex, without public transport — is narrower than the raw licence-holder numbers suggest. Screening for punctuality and for a workable commute matters more here than screening for experience.

What express linehaul demands from a driver

Stansted handles a large volume of express and integrator air freight. Aircraft land overnight, freight is sorted in the small hours, and trailers depart to regional hubs against fixed slots.

The driving itself is not difficult — light loads, minimal handball, repeating routes. What it demands is absolute reliability on timing. A departure slot missed by twenty minutes can miss a next-day commitment, and the cost of that lands on your contract rather than on the driver.

So the screening question that matters is not "can this driver handle a trailer", it is "will this driver be here at 01:45 every night for the next six months". We screen for that explicitly: attendance history, commute realism and whether the driver has actually done permanent nights before rather than thinking they would like to.

The commute is a recruitment constraint, not a detail

The airport sits in rural Essex. Takeley and Birchanger are adjacent, Great Dunmow is east on the A120, Bishop’s Stortford is four miles west in Hertfordshire, and Harlow is further down the M11.

At 01:00 there is effectively no public transport. Every driver on your overnight linehaul will be driving to work, which means parking, and it means your realistic catchment is defined by driving time at night rather than by population.

That is actually good news in one respect: at that hour the M11 and A120 are clear, so the catchment is wider than it looks. Drivers from Harlow, Braintree and Cambridge are viable for a 01:00 start in a way they would not be for 08:00.

Airside access, and when it is not needed

Driving inside the security boundary needs an airside pass and usually an airside driving permit, taking weeks to clear.

A good deal of linehaul does not require it — trailers loaded at off-airport sheds or collected landside mean the driver never enters a controlled zone. Specify which your work is when you brief us, because it changes lead time from days to weeks and it is the most common source of confusion in airport driver briefs.

What we verify

Physical licence, Driver CPC and digital tachograph card for every driver, licence checked for endorsements, and category entitlement confirmed against the vehicle.

For express work we additionally check night-shift history and attendance, because that is what actually predicts whether a placement holds. A driver with a flawless licence and no history of permanent nights is a higher risk on this work than their paperwork suggests.

Where ADR or other endorsements are relevant for specific freight, we confirm they are current.

Peak, and why it needs planning in summer

Express freight peaks hard from Black Friday to Christmas. Volumes rise, slots tighten, and every operator on the airport wants more Class 1 drivers in the same six weeks.

By November the available pool across the M11 corridor is thin at any rate. Book Q4 driver requirements in Q3, and hold on to the drivers you have rather than flexing down in October and expecting to flex back up.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can you supply drivers at Stansted?
For landside linehaul and Essex distribution, often within 24 to 48 hours outside peak. Airside driving needs pass and permit clearance, which takes weeks.
What do you screen for on overnight express work?
Night-shift history, attendance record and commute realism, alongside the usual licence and CPC checks. On fixed-slot linehaul, reliability predicts success better than driving experience alone.
How far will drivers travel for a 1am start?
Further than you might expect, because the M11 and A120 are clear at that hour. Drivers from Harlow, Braintree and Cambridge are viable for small-hours starts in a way they would not be for a morning shift.
Do all your Stansted drivers hold airside passes?
No, and most linehaul does not need one. We maintain some cleared drivers for work inside the boundary, but landside roles start much faster.
When should we book peak drivers?
During Q3. Express freight peaks from Black Friday through Christmas and by November driver availability across the corridor is very tight.
